To put it succinctly, what this refers to is the method of increasing the chance of your website being among the top results shown by a search engine, based on the keywords utilized to effect the search.

Begin with a Website Design that is Solid

A website design that is structured and written well is the most important beginning factor in SEO. This is the foundation that you build everything on. SEO will not work well unless you have a good website design to back it up. It will fall apart, no matter how hard you try to keep it together.

How long will it take?

Alright, you have embarked on a full-blown SEO effort; when are you going to begin to see any results? In reality, it will take one to six months of diligent SEO and marketing work to yield any real results. Keep in mind, this should be considered an investment that you are making for the long haul. Sit back and have some patience; the benefits of a successful SEO campaign and marketing strategy are long-term and worthwhile.

SEO - A Strategic Investment

The specific algorithm that Google or Yahoo employs to decide page rank is a carefully kept proprietary secret known only internally. But we do know enough about how search engines rank websites that we are able to develop SEO strategies that are successful, when used properly. There aren't any special tricks or methods that will earn you the top Google ranking right away. Implementing a total, well-rounded, SEO strategy is the key to elevating page rank, and this requires time as well as effort. We can no longer just 'keyword stuff' or improve page ranking through the use of hidden content. Today's search engines are 'smart,' and for SEO to yield results, you will need content that is meaningful, social networking skills, well-written articles, and an emphasis on marketing strategies.

You must have a great web design before you begin your marketing research.

Once you have determined that your website design is solid, the next thing to do is a bit of market research. Which keywords for optimization to be aware of is crucial. Search volume is an extremely important item in the determination of the focus of keywords. If people are not searching for those keywords, there is not much point in trying to focus on a keyword phrase that incorporates those keywords. You need to select two or three keyword phrases that best describe your product or service. Targeting these keyword phrases will provide you with a niche that you can focus on aggressively.

Google and Yahoo

Most computer users have used either of the two most popular search engines, Google or Yahoo, when searching for products and services on the Internet. Accordingly, getting a page to be ranked as high as possible by Google and/or Yahoo is the goal of most SEO. When we talk about page rank, we are talking about where a website is placed in search results, the higher the better. A typical computer user will ordinarily only look at the first two or three pages of search results when looking for a business online. The average computer user will conclude that a business that is displayed on the first or second page of results is somehow better than the ones that are displayed further down. Obviously, if you are planning to use your website to generate leads and boost your business, you must achieve a high placement on the list for the keywords affiliated with your website.
